INDEX.ŽENE is a participatory, interactive project by visual artist Andreja Kulunčić, developed in collaboration with women — primarily random passers-by on the streets of cities that have so far taken part in the project. The project has been successfully carried out in Split, Naples, Belgrade, and Ljubljana, and will be realised in Zagreb in 2025. The project aims to bear witness to how women perceive their position in society, expressed through their response to the question “How do I feel?” In each participating city — including Zagreb — the question is displayed on city-light billboards and in media spaces, inviting women to call a free telephone line and leave an anonymous message. Each caller selects one of three possible answers to whether she feels: satisfied, discriminated against, or abused. The second component of the project involves the ongoing publication of response statistics, presented at the exhibition itself, but also displayed on large digital billboards in public squares, online, and within the exhibition space of the Zagreb City Museum. The results will also be featured in the artist’s upcoming retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
The project presentation and discussion will include artist Andreja Kulunčić together with her collaborators: Dunja Bonacci Skenderović, independent consultant on violence against women; Lana Bobić, feminist theologian; Dorotea Šušak, activist and Executive Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies; Nataša Bijelić, sociologist and expert associate at CESI – Centre for Education, Counselling and Research; and Marina Perica Krapljanov, curator of the INDEX.ŽENE project and exhibition.
